Message from Archbishop Terrence Prendergast

Response to the Planned Satanic Ritual

For our struggle is not against enemies of blood and flesh, but against the rulers, against the authorities,
against the cosmic powers of this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly
places. Ephesians 6,12

A Satanic black mass scheduled in Ottawa on August 17 is highly objectionable to Catholics and may
desecrate what we consider to be of the highest value: our Lord Jesus Christ present in the Eucharist.
The event, sponsored by the Satanic Temple in Canada, will take place at 10PM at the Koven, a heavy
metal bar and restaurant a few blocks from Notre-Dame Cathedral Basilica. It is likely that other black
masses have taken place in Ottawa, but this is the first one to be promoted publicly. Its organizers admit
that it is a parody of a true Mass.

This is clearly an attack on religion and an expression of hate speech.

To prevent the desecration of a Host, I urge our priests and extraordinary ministers of the Holy
Communion to ensure that the communicants consume the Host as soon as they receive communion at
Mass.

I ask intercessory prayer groups to pray for those who plan to participate in this event so that they turn
away from the path of darkness and turn instead to the light of Christian faith. In particular, you may
wish to invoke the intercession of the Blessed Virgin, Saint Joseph, and Saint Michael the Archangel.
Please offer Masses, holy hours, rosaries, votive candles, and acts of reparation for these intentions.
Any manipulation in occult practices has the potential to open a spiritual door into the realm of evil by
giving permission to demons. It invites foul spirits to harm individuals and entire communities. I would
warn anyone curious about this event and drawn to participate in it to stay away from such
enticements. We find true freedom only in Jesus.

I will offer a Mass of Reparation the morning of August 17. Please join me in praying that God wouldturn this attack on Christian faith into an occasion of grace.
