Armor Dei

The Amor Dei Charismatic Community vision is that everyone may know God’s Love through the knowledge of Christ, the Living Word, and may grow as mature christians through the teachings of the church by sharing this love. At St. Leonard’s Amor Dei coordinates with other local churches to help the needy in the local community by providing food throughout the year and especially with our Christmas Hamper efforts.

Development & Peace

image_gallery-10Development and Peaceis the official international development organization of the Catholic Church in Canada, founded in 1968 by Canada’s bishops, laity and priests. It is inspired by the values of the Gospel, raises awareness in Canada about the root causes of poverty, and invites Canadians to participate in actions that will bring change. We are all called to live our daily lives according to values of justice and solidarity through prayer, action and almsgiving. Funded in part by the Canadian International Development Agency

(CIDA) and by personal donations of the faithful, Development and Peace provides support to partner organizations such as Caritas International, in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East. There are two nation-wide campaigns annually: the Fall Action Campaign and the Share Lent Collection.

Pro-Life

image_gallery-2

The Catholic church believes that all humans have the right to life from conception to natural death. In Canada, over 100 thousand unborn babies die every year because they are aborted. That means that, since 1969, over two million Canadian children have been killed through abortion. St. Leonard parish actively participates in Pro-Life activities within our local community of Ottawa and stands in solidarity with the church on its stand for life.

Children’s Liturgy of the Word

At St. Leonard’s 9:00 am Sunday mass, we practice a Children’s Liturgy of the Word. After the opening rites, the young children are invited by the pastor to depart for the church hall to have their own version of the Liturgy of the Word. At the beginning of the Liturgy of the Eucharist, the children return to the church. We cover the Gospel of the day at a level the children can understand and enjoy. We enrich this with discussion, prayers, songs, and crafts. We also try to raise awareness of God’s love, the humanity of Jesus, the Seasons of the Church, the understanding of symbols in the Mass and the context of the Bible. Our aim is to make the children’s experience of church meaningful, whilst helping them to grow in the faith of the Catholic Church and develop as full and active members of our Parish Community.

Social Action

Social Action is a ministry at St Leonard’s that provides parishioners an expanded opportunity to learn about, and become involved in, various social action and social justice activities. Our mandate is to reach out to those in need of humanitarian aid, through involvement in some kind of social action with several local, domestic and international projects.

Development and Peace activities fall under this mandate, and as such, the parish rep for Development and Peace automatically becomes a member of the Social Action Ministry team. Members of the current Development and Peace team have all agreed to continue to serve on the new St Leonard Social Action Team. Newcomers to this new ministry team are most welcome.

Throughout the year, the parish will be presented with projects at all three levels (local, domestic, and international), offering St Leonard parishioners an opportunity to connect to and support social action efforts on a personal level.
Please watch the bulletin for more information.
